Excellence in teaching and researchWe received a maximum score of 24 in the QAA Subject Review, and were rated #1 in terms of overall student satisfaction among all UK philosophy departments in the 2007 National Student Survey. We are ranked in the top four departments in the UK in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. (In the preceding two exercises we were rated 5A.) We are also highly ranked in the latest Philosophical Gourmet Report. Research EnvironmentIn the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department received the following very positive endorsement of its research environment and culture from the Philosophy Panel "Research structure and income, research strategy, staffing policy, research student numbers and the number of research studentships are all outstanding, as were contributions to the broader environment. The research training and career advice for research students, the number of conferences and workshops hosted, and the important contribution of the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies, are particularly impressive." Department NewsThe Department has done exceptionally well in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Measuring either by the average grade returned per member of staff submitted (and everyone was put in for the exercise), or by the 'medals table', the Department emerges as in the nation's top four.
