Profile

John joined the Pennine Water Group research staff in 2005 following a long and varied career in the water industry. His PhD thesis, entitled "Water Modelling in Distribution Networks", was a treatise of the hydraulic and quality aspects of potable water supply and his research interests reflect this being concerned with all aspects of water supply systems and asset management.

Current project commitments include ADA, concerned with computing systems for the automated detection and location of leakage in water distribution networks; Neptune, designed to advance knowledge and understanding of water supply systems in order to improve operational efficiency and customer service; Novel Disinfection Methods, examining the feasibility of sonic resonance and plasma disinfection techniques for water mains; Distributed Water Age and Quality, endeavouring to shed some light on the reasons for failed bacteriological water quality samples in distribution networks by determining water age profiles within the networks and relating them to measured water quality parameters; and Hydrokinetic Cleaning Techniques evaluating hydrokinetic methods to remove corrosion products from the internal walls of water mains.

John is a Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Water and Environment Manager, and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
