Teaching
The Academic Unit of Surgical Oncology is heavily involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at The University of Sheffield.
In Phase 1(a) students are attached to the unit for their research project. A half day symposium is provided in Phase 1(b) relating to topics where students are introduced to patients with breast cancer and given basic information about the diagnosis and management of this condition.
Miss Wyld leads clinical teaching teams in Phase 2 (introductory to clinical skills) and Phase 4. Miss Wyld and Professor Reed participate in teaching teams in Phase 2 and Phase 4 extended clinical skills of the undergraduate curriculum.
Phase 3(a) students spend the week attached to breast services visiting out patients, a multidisciplinary team meeting and theatre as well as receiving instruction on diagnositc radiology, spending time with patients and the breast care nurses.
Phase 3(b) frequently apply to undertake their options and research projects in the unit and at least one BMedSci project is undertaken each year
Professor Reed is Chair of the Curriculum Assessment Committee with over-arching reponsibility for all undergraduate assessments. He coordinated the final year exams MB, CLB, and OSCE from 1999 to 2004.
A comprehensive assessment policy has been produced and a number of innovations introduced in assessment of undergraduate students.
The unit is also active in postgraduate education with Miss Wyld coordinating the cancer network educational programme for breast diseases.
