About the Institute
The Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Sheffield was officially opened on the 21st December, 1993 by Jose Carreras, who himself recovered from leukaemia following a bone marrow transplant.

The Institute occupies about 750 sq. M. of newly refurbished space in the Medical School building adjacent to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It accommodates over 40 staff including seven group leaders, twenty six research and support staff and seven postgraduate students.

We currently hold grants worth over £4 million. These come mainly from YCR, BBSRC, CRUK, MRC and other national and international collaborations.
Our facilities are primarily designed to accommodate research using tissue cultures and human clinical material. We house up to date facilities for high throughput processing of clinical materials, SNP analysis, and image capture. High throughput sequencing and FACS are available as Medical School core facilities.
