Biography

I grew up and underwent primary education in Birmingham, United Kingdom before qualifying in medicine from the University of Sheffield in 1981. Postgraduate surgical training was undertaken in the United Kingdom and following a period of research at the University of Louisville I returned to Sheffield for Higher Surgical Training. I was appointed Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 1992 and subsequently was appointed to the Foundation Chair in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sheffield in 1999. Following the retirement of Professor Alan Johnson in 2003 I became Head of Academic General Surgery and am currently Head of the University Department of Oncology.

Research Interests

My major areas of research have covered the role of microcirculation in the development and treatment of cancer and also studied in the regulation of genes involved in breast cancer susceptibility and development with particular emphasis on the genes regulating angiogenesis. This has resulted in a number or successful collaborations particularly with the International Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). In recent years I have developed an increasing interest in the management of breast cancer in older patients and factors affecting surgical decision making in patients undergoing treatment for early breast cancer. This has resulted in a successful collaboration between the Universities of Sheffield, Cardiff and Oxford and the development of a web based decision support instrument (Bresdex).

Another major area of clinical and research interest is the management of patients with soft tissue sarcoma. I was a member of the NICE guideline development group for commissioning services for soft tissue sarcoma and as well as contributing to the development of the Sheffield sarcoma service we have developed a parallel research programme focussing on understanding the significance of genomic variation in this form of cancer. Over the past ten years I have gained increasing experience in the field of assessment in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training and lead this area for the University of Sheffield School of Medicine. I have also contributed significantly to the re-development of the UK intercollegiate MRCS examination and continue to contribute through the intercollegiate surgical curriculum project.

Teaching Interests

At a local level I am lead clinician for breast surgery at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Trust where we treat over 400 patients per year with breast cancer. As part of the surgical team I undertake a full range of surgical procedures including oncoplastic breast surgery.
