Biography
I studied Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool and was awarded my PhD in 1987. I undertook postdoctoral work in drug metabolism in liver disease with Prof. Edgar Ohnhaus at the Christian Albrechts Universität in Kiel, Germany, and on thyroid autoantibody repertoires with Prof. Richard Himsworth in Aberdeen. I developed an interest in bone and joint biology working with Prof. Stuart Ralston in Aberdeen and Prof. Tim Skerry in York. I joined the University of Sheffield in 1999 when I was appointed Lecturer in Bone Biology in the Academic Unit of Child Health under Prof. Nick Bishop. I joined the Academic Unit of Human Nutrition in 2012 to support the MMedSci course.
Research Interests
My research interests lie in the biology and pathology of bones and joints. I have broad interest in molecular and cellular signalling mechanisms in bone and joint cells and in the impact of genetic, lifestyle (including nutrition) and environmental factors on bone and joint health and disease throughout life.
Teaching Interests
I am deputy lead for the MMedSci/Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition. I am a Pathway and Module leader on the Experimental Medicine Pathway for the M.Sc. in Molecular Medicine. Outside of the University, I am a faculty member on the Advanced Course in Calcium Metabolism for the British Paediatric and Adolescent Bone Group of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
Professional Activities
I am a member of the European Calcified Tissue Society, the International Bone and Mineral Society, the Bone Research Group the British Society for Research into Ageing and the Nutrition Society. I am an Affiliate Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and a member of the College´s British Paediatric and Adolescent Bone Group. I am a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for Sheffield Children´s Hospital Charity.
Current Projects
The role of acid sensing proteins in rheumatoid arthritis
Glucagon like peptide 2 and feeding: effects on bone turnover
Microindentation analysis of bone quality
