After Your Degree - Careers

Sheffield University Music Department graduates have had great success in securing employment, more often than not involving music. Employment opportunities have included artist/orchestral management (after taking arts administration courses), music therapy and music education (instrumental and/or classroom). Students have also gone on to further study and performing. There are many career opportunities available with a music degree. The degree itself demands that you take an historical perspective of music, make critical analytical judgements, work as a team, possess brilliant time management and interpersonal skills and play your instruments to an extremely high standard. You will probably work with music from around the world and may involve yourself with the science of sound and computer music programming.

From Level II you are encouraged to think seriously about your future, post graduation. Some students will, by the middle of Level II, be teaching and performing locally, and will have forged numerous contacts in the region. The University Careers Service offers extensive help to all students and provides a wide-ranging program of career-related events each semester. It also hosts a number of seminars (usually at the Music Department) specifically for music students, where there is the opportunity for a one-to-one interview with a Careers Service member of staff.
