Tandem Stage 3

Pre-Requisites

Stage 3: A Level Grade A - C or equivalent, or a II.1* classification in the Stage 2 MLT Module in appropriate language
Stage 4: A level + 1 year or equivalent
Stage 5 A level + 2 years or equivalent

Aims

To enable students to develop proficiency in spoken English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, inter-cultural awareness and independent learning skills.

Intended Outcomes

On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Use French, German, Italian or Spanish to develop a collaborative relationship with a learning partner.
• Seek and give information about cultural similarities and differences.
• Share in the management and evaluation of their own learning and that of their partner.

Methods and Materials

Study for this module will entail:
1. A minimum of 24 hours of bilingual collaborative learning with a native-speaker partner.
2. Regular joint attendance at Tandem advice sessions.
3. The maintenance of a learner log, which should include:
• A statement of the agreed learning goals of both partners.
• An account of the agreed correction processes.
• A record of any modification to these undertaken in the light of experience or advice
• An assessment of the extent to which both partners have met their learning goals.

Assessment

Assessment will be on the basis of course work. Learners will submit for assessment a Tandem diary. They will also have to take part in a tandem speaking test on the semester´s work (10-12 minutes). In order to obtain a pass grade, both the speaking test and the diary MUST be completed. At stage 3 learners may choose to write their diary in the target language but at stage 4 half, and at stage 5 all, of the diary entries will be in the target language.
