Pre-Requisites
Successful completion of corresponding Stage 4, Semester 2 module, and have spent a year abroad, OR equivalent.
Aims
The course aims to equip learners to operate successfully in the foreign language, in their chosen career or area of academic study.
Intended Outcomes
On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Give a structured talk (approximately 10 minutes) on an aspect of their work to an expert audience.
• Take an active role in negotiations, discussions, interviews and meetings.
• Perform a range of complex work- or study-related tasks (by letter, e-mail and telephone), using appropriate styles and registers.
• Understand complex or specialised texts and pieces of speech, identifying key facts, ideas and arguments.
• Write reports on areas of their work (maximum 1500 words).
• Fill in complex forms and take notes.
Methods & Materials
Extensive use will be made of task-based simulations and pair and group work. There is no single course book. Learners will require a dictionary, appropriate reference books and an e-mail account.
Additional learning resources are available in the Self-Access Centre, including networked computers, live satellite TV and a library of video and audio cassettes.
Assessment
Assessment will be on the basis of course work. Students will be responsible for collecting a portfolio of evidence that they have acquired the skills necessary for the performance of the above tasks.
IMPORTANT
All students with qualifications/experience in the language other than those stated above must consult the relevant MLTC stage Co-ordinator for guidance on the appropriate module to take.
