Stage 4

Pre-Requisites

Successful completion of corresponding Stage 3, Semester 2 module, OR equivalent

Aims

The course aims to further enhance students’ ability to communicate in the foreign language, in both spoken and written forms. Students will develop their language-related study skills and broaden their understanding of the countries in which the language is spoken. This course also aims to encourage the use of new communications technologies. Students are expected to use ICT.

Intended Outcomes

On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Understand authentic speech.
• Understand a full range of authentic texts.
• Identify key facts, ideas and arguments in a formal written text or speech.
• Elicit factual information and opinions from other speakers.
• Express personal views and arguments.
• Give a prepared formal talk.
• Write formal and analytical essays.

Methods & Materials

Learning activities will include pair and group work, role plays and simulations. Extensive use will be made of authentic materials. Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.

In addition to the course book, students require a dictionary, appropriate reference books and an e-mail account. The Self-Access Centre has a wide range of material to support independent learning.

Assessment

All four skills will be assessed over the year. There may be an element of course work in the Spring Semester. In order to pass this module, all tests must be taken.

All students with qualifications/experience in the language other than those stated above must consult the relevant MLTC Stage Co-ordinator for guidance on the appropriate module to take.
