Stage 3

Pre-Requisites

French/Spanish – A level A,B,C OR equivalent.
German/Italian – AS grade A,B,C OR equivalent OR successful completion of corresponding Stage 2, Semester 2 Module.

Aims

The course aims to maintain and develop students’ language skills, to acquaint them with the culture of the language studied and to equip them with the communicative proficiency needed for study or work abroad. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to communicate accurately in both speech and writing. Students are expected to use ICT.

Intended Outcomes

On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Present information, discuss and engage with issues of contemporary concern.
• Understand and take notes on a variety of audio and video material.
• Understand articles on contemporary society and matters of academic and personal interest.
• Write extensively on topics covered.
• Use a variety of more advanced tenses and grammatical structures.
• Deliver a prepared presentation.

Methods & Materials

Students will be taught using a range of media (print, audio, video, electronic media). In language study growing emphasis will be placed on the ability to communicate accurately in both speech and writing.

In addition to the course book, students require a dictionary, appropriate reference books and an e-mail account. The Self-Access Centre has a wide range of material to support independent learning.

Assessment

All four skills will be assessed over the year. There may be an element of course work in the Spring Semester. In order to pass this module, all tests must be taken.

IMPORTANT
All students with qualifications/experience in the language other than those stated above must consult the relevant MLTC Stage Co-ordinator for guidance on the appropriate module to take.
