Stage 2
Pre-Requisites
Semester 1 - GCSE Grade A*/A OR successful completion of corresponding Stage 1, Semester 2 module.
Semester 2 - AS Grade D OR successful completion stage 2, Semester 1 module.
Aims
The course will enable students to make an effective transition from stage 1 to the next level. It aims to develop the communicative competence of learners, both in speaking and writing. This will be supported by the coverage of advanced grammatical structures. Much of the material will focus on contemporary social issues.
Use of ICT is encouraged.
Intended Outcomes
On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Seek and respond to opinions, preferences and intentions.
• Ask for and give instructions, advice, clarifications and explanations.
• Make comparisons and suggestions.
• Use a variety of tenses and more advanced structures.
• Read fairly complex authentic texts and obtain factual information.
• Recount events and describe processes in writing. Read and write correspondence.
• Discuss contemporary issues.
Methods & Materials
Teaching will take place in small groups, using a range of media (print, audio, video). Speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group work.
In addition to the course book, students may require a dictionary and appropriate reference books. The Self-Access Centre has a wide range of material to support independent learning.
Assessment
All four skills will be assessed over the year. There may be an element of course work in the Spring Semester. In order to pass this module, all tests must be taken.
IMPORTANT
All students with qualifications/experience in the language other than those stated above must consult the relevant MLTC Stage Co-ordinator for guidance on the appropriate module to take.
