On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Perform straightforward reading and writing tasks - e.g. understand simple notices and instructions.
• Give information on topics such as family, home, studies.
• Express likes, dislikes and preferences.
• Accomplish tasks to include shopping, ordering food and drink.
• Read simple texts and obtain factual information.
• Produce written information to deal with routine daily activities.
Methods & Materials
Formal teaching will be supplemented by more informal group and pair work. In addition to the course book, students may require a dictionary and appropriate reference books.
Additional materials are available in the Self-Access Centre, including CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), and further video and audio tapes.
Assessment
All four skills will be assessed over the year. In addition, students must complete, and hand in, a record of independent study, showing at least 8 items. In order to achieve a pass grade, both tests must be taken in each semester. In order to achieve a grade higher than a pass, the independent study record must be completed and handed in.
IMPORTANT
Stage 1A is for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Students who possess a qualification in the relevant language will not be allowed to take the module.
Stage 1A is offered again in the spring semester in Italian and Spanish.
