Project Stage 3

Co-Requisites

Corresponding Stage 3 MLT Module, MLT 216 (Spanish Consolidation) or MLT 226 (French Consolidation)

Aims

• To enable advanced students of foreign languages to work independently at a level of complexity appropriate to their language proficiency.
• To encourage critical exploration of an aspect of contemporary European culture and society.
• To stimulate critical engagement with a specialised aspect of the student’s main discipline.

Intended Outcomes

On completing a project module, students should be able to:
• Locate, interpret and present specialist information in a foreign language.
• Distinguish fact from opinion and argument from illustrative detail.
• Present project findings in speech and writing, using an appropriate register and - where necessary - subject specific terminology.
• Plan and manage projects involving individual research.

Methods and Materials

Students will first identify an aspect of contemporary society, politics, or culture - or of their main subject of study - of particular interest to them.

Students will be responsible for devising an outline plan for extended study of the topic and for selecting an appropriate method of gathering and analysing relevant information (from specialist publications, World Wide Web sites and native-speaker experts).

Students will be expected to subject the data thus gathered to critical scrutiny, in order to produce a formal written report and a structured spoken presentation.

Assessment

Assessment will be on the basis of a written report and spoken presentation. At stage 3, students should produce one project of at least 1500 words, worth 2/3 of the overall grade. At stage 4, the written project should be between 2000 - 2500 words, and at stage 5, 2500 - 3000 words. In order to obtain a pass grade, students must deliver a spoken presentation.
