Aims
• To encourage students to work independently in the foreign language.
• To enable students to acquire subject-specific discourse and provide an opportunity for them to investigate an area of language, culture or technology of particular interest to them.
Intended Outcomes
On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Report on the information gleaned from their investigations.
• Make initial hypotheses resulting from their projects.
• Present their findings in speech and in writing.
Methods & Materials
• Students will have weekly tutorials for project guidance.
• Students will be expected to research materials independently for use in their projects. Print, TV and electronic media are available for use in the Self-Access Centre.
Assessment
Students will produce one project (at least 1000 words) or a number of shorter pieces totalling 1000 words, worth 2/3 of the overall grade, and give a spoken presentation to the group on their project (5-7 minutes), worth 1/3 of the overall grade. Students opting for a long project will be expected to submit a draft of their written work by week 8 of the semester.
A pass grade will be awarded for the module, only if a spoken presentation is delivered.
