Latin Post-Beginners

Pre-Requisites

Semester 1 GCSE Grade D/E OR successful completion of Stage 1, Semester 2 module OR equivalent.
Semester 2 GCSE Grade B/C OR successful completion Post-beginners stage, Semester 1 module OR equivalent

Aims

The module continues with the study of the language and elements of the culture and literature of ancient Rome, covered in the beginners 1 course. Students will deepen their awareness of the workings of grammar and syntax, and develop the ability to manipulate the language fluently. The module will also continue to develop knowledge and application of grammatical usage and the work on derivations from Latin in English and/or Romance languages.

Outcomes

On completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
• An ability to manipulate Latin grammar and syntax, including a variety of tenses, relative clauses, the passive, the ablative absolute, indirect questions.
• An ability to read and understand intermediate level texts in Latin.
• An ability to translate from Latin into English and English into Latin.
• An ability to understand words in English and/or Romance languages which are derived from Latin.

Methods & Materials

Formal teaching will be supplemented by more informal group and pair work. In addition to the course book, students may require a dictionary and appropriate reference books.

Additional materials are available in the Self-Access Centre.

Assessment

Students will be tested on their knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax as well as translation and comprehension skills. In order to achieve a pass grade, two tests must be taken in each semester.
