Latin Stage 1

Pre-Requisites

Semester 1 No pre-requisites.
Semester 2 Successful completion stage 1, Semester 1 module OR equivalent

Aims

• to develop at an appropriate level a competence in the language studied
• to develop a sensitive and analytical approach to language
• to develop an heightened awareness of the influence of Latin on English and/or Romance languages
• to develop an understanding of grammar which students can apply ultimately to the study of any language
• to read and understand some of the literature in the original language
• to acquire some understanding of the civilization within which the language and literature studied was produced.

Outcomes

On completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
• an ability to read and understand texts in Latin
• an ability to manipulate Latin grammar and syntax, namely gender, number and case, agreement of adjectives, the four conjugations , present and past tenses
• an ability to translate from Latin into English and English into Latin
• an ability to understand words in English and/or Romance languages which are derived from Latin

Methods & Materials

Formal teaching will be supplemented by more informal group and pair work. In addition to the course book, students may require a dictionary and appropriate reference books.

Additional materials are available in the Self-Access Centre.

Assessment

Students will be tested on their knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax as well as translation and comprehension skills. In order to achieve a pass grade, two tests must be taken in each semester.

IMPORTANT

Stage 1A is for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Students who possess a qualification in the relevant language will not be allowed to take the module.
