Consolidation Module (French & Spanish)
Pre-requisites
The module is proposed for students with an AS Level grade A-C OR A-Level grade D/E OR equivalent (e.g. from stage 2).
Aims
The course aims to enable students to consolidate their understanding of contemporary aspects of the target language countries through reading and listening to authentic texts. Students’ communication skills will be developed through speaking and writing. This will be supported by study of advanced grammatical structures. The course also aims to strengthen the communicative competence of learners, through study of texts based on contemporary social issues. Much of the material will focus on contemporary social developments. Students are expected to use ICT.
Intended Outcomes
On completing the course, students should be able to:
• Understand and take notes on a variety of audio and video material, much of it authentic.
• Understand articles on contemporary issues.
• Express probability and hypothesis.
• Discuss in speech and writing contemporary issues, backing up their arguments with facts.
• Deliver a prepared presentation.
• Use multimedia resources such as CALL (computer assisted language learning), video and audio, Internet as an integral part of foreign language study, in particular for independent study, grammar practice, and reading and writing skills.
Methods and Materials
Teaching will use a range of media (print, audio, video, Internet). Speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair & group work.
Assessment
All four skills will be assessed over the year. There may be an element of course work in the Spring Semester. In order to pass this module, all tests must be taken.
