Dopla teacher training programme
The course is run by the Modern Languages Teaching Centre primarily for probationary lecturers, post-graduate tutors and foreign language assistants who will be working and studying in the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
The Unit includes the following core training:
• How Students Learn • Small Group Teaching • Planning a lesson • A First Lesson in the Target Language: How Learners Feel. • The Communicative Approach • Using Audio and Video Material in Language Learning • Assessment • Using materials effectively
Optional modules for private study include:
• Understanding Language and Language Learning • Facilitating Second Language Learning • Approaches to Teaching Literary and Cultural Studies • Working in British Higher Education
Part 2 of the unit follows a period of classroom experience on the part of the language tutor and centres on a feedback session in which trainees reflect on their classroom practice.
During the second semester tutors are also required to participate in tandem observation sessions with fellow language tutors.
A portfolio of evidence is collected which includes the following:
• 2 reports on lessons observed by a departmental mentor • 1 report on a session observed by a fellow trainee or peer • 1 report on observation of a session taught by a fellow trainee or peer • A sample of detailed lesson plans with full self-evaluation and reflection on practice (teaching/facilitation of learning and classroom management of the lesson)
The Dopla programme aims to facilitate: a) development of reflective practice among those entering the language teaching profession; b) collection of evidence to be used for gaining (associate) membership of the Higher Education Academy.
