MA in Screen Translation
The innovative MA in Screen Translation offers students a unique opportunity to combine theory with practice in the fast growing field of screen translation. Our increasing use of audiovisual material in our daily lives has led to a huge surge in demand for screen translation in recent years.
The constraints of the audiovisual medium, which shape the practice of screen translation, make it a fascinating and rewarding area of study. On the MAST programme you will have the opportunity both to develop your translation skills and also to acquire new screen translation skills using industry standard subtitling software.
Themed screenings of International and European films are incorporated into the teaching of the MAST programme and you will have the opportunity to view a range of thought- provoking subtitled films at the University and also at the Showroom Cinema.
As a MAST student you will benefit from the strong partnership between MAST and Sheffield’s independent cinema the Showroom.
The MAST programme includes the following modules:
• The Theory and Practice of Subtitling and Dubbing
• Screen Translation of Literary Classics
• Subtitling Project
A combination of screen translation and translation modules are combined in this programme, which is designed both for students wanting to specialize in screen translation and also for practicing translators wishing to extend their range of skills.
Course content
Core modules: Theory and Practice of Subtitling, Introduction to Theories of translation, Advanced Translation of a Language, Subtitling Project, Dissertation.
Translation and translation skills modules include the following languages:
English into Arabic, Chinese, Italian and Polish.
Czech, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish into English. .
Please note:
Translation modules normally have 20-22 contact hours over the academic year with additional independent study. Where student numbers are small (less than 3 students) this contact time may be reduced and/or delivery method altered (e.g. portfolio).
Please also note:
The academic IELTS requirement is 7.0 with 6.5 in each component or equivalent.
Optional modules: Approaches to Translation Genres, Film Translation of Literary Classics, Language in Context, Theories of Intercultural Communication, Critical Reading and Writing at MA Level, International Technical Communication, Linguistic and Cultural Skills for Interpreters and International Management.
