Research Interests

David´s research interests broadly fall into the epidemiological, clinical, immunological and workplace-based aspects of occupational lung disease. The research profile in the Centre for Workplace Health is formulated to develop simple practical solutions to workplace health problems, and as a consequence all research has a practical or translational component.

Activities and Distinctions

  • In addition to the standard role of a clinical academic and honorary consultant physician, David has a role within the Health & Safety Executive. For example, David sits on HSE’s Asthma Board and the Disease Reduction Programme Strategic Board. In addition, he recently sat on the national COPD NSF Prevention and Awareness Committee. He continues to sit on the ARTP and SWORD advisory boards.
  • In addition, David has links with the WHO and other international collaborators such as South Africa and America, and has recently drawn together a national consensus for the diagnosis of occupational asthma. He is currently working on two international collaborative projects addressing diagnostic issues in occupational lung disease.
  • David also co-ordinates the GORDS group, a group of occupational respiratory disease specialists supported and funded by HSE, who meet to help define HSE policy, draft guidance and formulate research. He also represents GORDS on the UK Respiratory Research Strategy.
  • David, along with other Centre staff run a selection of postgraduate training courses relating to respiratory workplace health, and also offer a University based Occupational Health Technicians course in collaboration with the Centre for Health and Social Care Studies and Service Development.
