Biography

I graduated from Sheffield Medical School in 1996, having intercalated a BMedSci in Pathology on the role of image analysis in the cytological diagnosis of breast cancer. After clinical posts, I spent two years as a Clinical Research Fund in what was then the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, now Cancer Research UK.

I returned to Sheffield in 2002 to combine specialist training in Diagnostic Histopathology with a Clinical Lectureship in Pathology. During this time I established a research group focussing on the pathogenesis of oesophageal cancer, with external funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research and Bardhan Research and Educational Trust of Rotherham. I am currently a Consultant Histopathologist at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, specialising in Gastrointestinal and Lung pathology, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield.

Research Interests

My primary area of interest is in the biology of metaplasia, particularly where this intersects with my clinical interest in gastrointestinal pathology. With Professor Sheila MacNeil, I´ve developed a novel 3-D tissue engineered model of the human oesophageal mucosa which provides an unparalleled platform for investigating the role of insults such as gastroduodenal refluxate in the development of Barrett´s metaplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. I also collaborate with Dr Bernard Corfe and colleagues in the Human Nutrition Unit, on studies focussing dietary influences on colonic crypt cell population dynamics, as well as Dr Angie Cox and Dr Carolyn Station.

Teaching Interests

I lecture on the following courses: BMedSci Orthoptics, MSc Nutritional Sciences, MSc Pathological Sciences, and MB ChB. I authored the chapter "Disorders of growth, differentiation and morphogenesis" in the 5th edition of "General and Systematic Pathology" (Eds Cross SS and Underwood JCE), and will additionally be co-authoring the chapter "Response to cellular injury" in the forthcoming 6th edition.
