The Academic Unit of Primary Medical Care (AUPMC) forms part of the the Medical School in the Faculty of Medicine. We are based on the Northern General Hospital site.

Our mission is to provide 'Excellence in primary and community care research; excellence in community-based teaching; enriched by interdisciplinarity.'

Research

Our current strategic research aims for 2007-2010 are to develop distinctive high-quality research portfolios in the areas of the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus and the early diagnosis and management of cancer (colorectal, lung and breast) in primary medical care; especially in collaboration with clinical colleagues in primary and secondary care.

Collaborations

Close research collaborations already exist with Departments of Family Medicine in Belgium, Italy, France, Spain, Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic. We also have close working links both nationally and locally with the Royal College of General Practitioners, Trent Research and Development Support Unit, Sheffield Health and Social Care Research Consortium and we are a founder member of the East Midlands and South Yorkshire Primary Care Research Network.

Teaching

Teaching is a core activity of the AUPMC. We deliver approximately 17% of the MBChB undergraduate curriculum centrally in the Unit and in our network of some 100 Practices with a pool of more than 100 GP tutors. The AUPMC is involved across all five years of the undergraduate course. We also have a vibrant postgraduate teaching activity with 11 successful research degrees in the last four years.

The Unit is also the base for the Sheffield General Practice Specialist Training Programme.
