MMedSci/Postgraduate Diploma (Vision & Strabismus)

Course structure
The MMedSci course is 3 years in length, delivered by distance learning with the support of 4 residential weekends in Sheffield. The course is modular, with 4 modules studied over the first 2 years followed by a research project equivalent to a further 2 modules in the final year.
The PG Diploma course consists of the first 2 years of the MMedSci course and is supported by 3 residential weekends in Sheffield. Postgraduate Diploma students take Modules 1-3 with an option to follow Module 4 (Research Methods) or undertake a literature based dissertation.
Title of modules are:
Module 1 - Concomitance and Incomitance in Depth
Aim: to develop an in depth knowledge and understanding of concomitant and incomitant strabismus with reference to clinical practice and recent literature.
Module 2 a) - Insight into Disease
Aim: to gain knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms by which particular diseases affect ocular motility and visual function.
OR
Module 2 b) - Low Vision
Aims:
1. To provide information, training and experience of a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to low vision service provision.
2. To enable Orthoptists to become competent low vision practitioners.
Module 3 - Eye to Vision
Aim: to develop an understanding of the neuro-physiological processes involved in visual function.
Module 4 - Research Methods (optional for PG Dip students)
Aim: to enable the student to understand the steps involved in the research process, including the analysis of results.
Dissertation (PG Diploma only as an option to Module 4)
Aim: to encourage students to pursue an area of interest independently and to critically appraise the selected topic through literature review.
Research Project: (MMedSci only)
Aim: to demonstrate a high level of ability in design, implementation, analysis and written presentation of a piece of individual research.
