Orthoptics degree: Entry requirements
We consider applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Once we receive your application form from UCAS, we aim to make a decision promptly. We will offer all applicants a place that we judge have suitable qualifications; some experience dealing with people (especially vulnerable people such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities); demonstrate some knowledge of what orthoptics entails; and thus would be likely to successfully complete the orthoptic degree.
During the 3 years of study students obtain clinical experience by going on block (usually 4 weeks) clinical placements at hospitals across the United Kingdom. Students must sign an entry agreement prior to commencing the degree that they are willing to go on placements chosen by the department anywhere in the UK.
The typical qualifications required are listed below.
GCSE: All applicants must have Mathematics and English Language at grade B and a Science subject at grade C or above, or the equivalent.
A level: The entry requirements are BBB at A-level and must include one of Biology, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. General studies are not accepted. Applicants resitting A-levels will be required to achieve grade ABB.
Alternative qualifications:
Typical offers are as follows:
- Scottish Highers: AABBBwith grade A in either Biology, Maths, Physics or Chemistry. Biology is preferred but not essential.
- Irish Leaving Certificate - ABBBB including one of Biology, Maths, Physics or Chemistry. Biology is preferred but not essential.
- International Baccalaureate: 32 points, 6 in either higher level Biology, Maths, Chemistry or Physics.Biology is preferred.
- BTEC: DDD in Applied Science + AS level in Biology or Mathematics and interview. Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science. 60 credits overall including 50 credits at level 3. Must include subjects such as Biology and Mathematics, and interview
We also consider applications from candidates with other qualifications such as Advanced Diploma in Society, Health and Development in combination with an Additional or Specialist Learning (ASL) component in a Science subject (Biology, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry), AQA Baccalaureate or Cambridge Pre-U qualifications.
Mature students will be considered individually dependent upon their previous qualifications and relevant experience.
