Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit

The Shefield NIHR Cardiovascular Biomedical Unit was awarded to the partnership between the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHFNT) and the University of Sheffield. It is one of five dedicated Cardiovascular Disease NIHR Biomedical Research Units in England that were awarded in 2008.

The NIHR Biomedical Research Units were awared to:

  • Drive innovation in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ill-health;
  • Translate advances in medical research into benefits for patients;
  • Provide a key component of the NHS contribution to our nation's international competitiveness by building on the best research leaders and their teams and enabling their host institutions to achieve or further develop critical mass in a priority research area.

Funding

Funding for the Biomedical Research Units commenced on 1 April 2008. Each Unit will receive £750k for the first year (to allow for start-up) and £1m per year for the following three years (£3.75m over four years). Awards will be made to the NHS partner, and can only be used to support the recurrent costs of patient focused research.

Professor David Crossman is the Director of the Sheffield NIHR Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit as well as the Head of the University of Sheffield's Department of Cardiovascular Science.
