Specialties Offered for Elective Placements
Elective study periods are available in the following areas. It may be possible to arrange placements in areas not included on the list. Please contact medelect@sheffield.ac.uk with your queries.
Anterior Skull Base Surgery (Adult)This medical elective will provide the student doctor with experience in two specialties that is otolaryngology and neurosurgery. The applicant will be exposed to a wide range of pathologies in a teaching hospital setting and in particular will observe transnasal endoscopic pituitary surgeries and anterior skull base cases. These operations are performed as a joint procedure with a Neurosurgeon and ENT Surgeon. There will be scope to see other aspects of ear, nose and throat surgery and neurosurgery. In addition there will be opportunities for case reports, audits, publications and presentations at national meetings. THERE MAY POTENTIALLY BE FUNDING AVAILABLE TO COVER THE £200 ACCEPTANCE FEE FOR THIS ELECTIVE. |
Acute Medicine (Adult)The department can potentially accept a maximum of 4 visiting students at any one time throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to practice history taking and physical examination, interpretation of the blood tests and CXR and ECG. There may also be the opportunity to get involved in research projects and audits. |
Anaesthetics (Adult)The department, which is based at both the Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is only able to accommodate one visiting student, during the summer months. |
Cardiothoracic Surgery (Adult)The department in able to offer a maximum of 2 clinical attachments for visiting students at any one time, during the year. This will be based primarily at the Northern General Hospital site. |
Critical Care (Adult)One clinical attachment is available at each of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital sites. The departments would preferably prefer to accept visiting students over the summer months. There may be the possible for involvement in departmental audits. |
Endocrinology (Paediatric)Placements not available over the summer months (eg. July – September). Possibly will include a crossover of specialties into Diabetes and General Paediatrics. Only 1 visiting student can be allocated to the department. |
ENT (Paediatric)The department, which is based at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, has indicated that it may be able to take two visiting students throughout the year. Involvement in audits within the department may be possible as part of the attachment. |
ENT (Adult) or Head and Neck Surgery (Adult)This clinical attachment will be undertaken at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Only two placements are available at any given time, across the two specialties listed. |
Gastroenterology (Adult)The Gastroenterology department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is able to offer only 1 clinical attachment at any given point throughout the year. Involvement in audits and/or research projects may be possible. |
Gastroenterology (Paediatric)The department, based at the Sheffield Children's Hospital is happy to accept 1-2 visiting elective students at any one time, from August 2011 onwards. There will be the opportunity for involvement in research and audit exercises. |
General Paediatrics2 Visiting students able to be placed at any one time during the year at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. There may be opportunities to undertake part of the clinical attachment in other areas, such as Diabetes, Continence etc. |
General Surgery (Adult)Based primarily at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital - One to two students may be accepted at any one time throughout the year. Involvement in research projects and audits is not typically offered. There is likely to be the opportunity to rotate to other firms, including the Northern General Hospital. Based primarily at the Northern General Hospital - The department is happy to accept 1 - 2 visiting students at any one time from April 201l onwards. Students will be exposed to a wide range of elective and emergency general surgical conditions including sub-specialty areas of oesophagogastric, hepatobiliary - pancreatic and potentially colorectal surgery. |
Infectious Diseases (Adult)Based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the department can accommodate 2 – 4 visiting students per year. The department can offer the following , in terms of learning opportunities: General Infectious Diseases; both in-patients and out-patients. Specialist clinics in HIV, TB, Hepatitis C and B. The unit also runs an OPAT (out-patient parenteral antibiotic therapy) service. |
Nephrology (Adult)One place available during the year for Nephrology. Additionally, there is a place available in Transplant/Renal Surgery, so two placements available in total, throughout the year. These placements will be undertaken primarily at the Northern General Hospital. If appropriate, there will be the opportunity to participate in departmental audits. |
Neurology (Adult)The Neurology Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is happy to accommodate two elective students at any time (up to 24 students per year). Students will be exposed to a wide range of different neurological conditions. They will have the opportunity, where appropriate, to participate in the teaching sessions for the UoS medical students. There may also be the opportunity to get involved in research or audits. |
Neurosurgery (Adult)The Neurosurgery Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is happy to accommodate one elective student at any time. Students will be exposed to a wide range of different neurologic conditions with a neurosurgical slant (e.g., head injury, intracranial haemorrhage, brain tumours, surgery for epilepsy and movement disorders, spinal disorders). The unit also includes the National Centre for Stereotactic Radiosurgery. They will have the opportunity, where appropriate, to participate in the teaching sessions for the UoS medical students. There may also be the opportunity to get involved in research or audits. |
Neurology (Paediatric)Based at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, the department can accept a maximum of 2 visiting students at any one time, throughout the year. |
Neurosurgery (Paediatric)The department may be able to accommodate between one and two visiting elective students throughout the year. |
Clinical Oncology (Adult)Clinical Oncology (Adult): The department, based at the Weston Park Hospital, a specialist Oncology Hospital, is only able to accommodate a maximum of 2 visiting students at any one time and only a maximum of 6 visiting students annually. This clinical attachment will also involve other related cancer care specialties. |
Oncology (Paediatric)Can potentially take one visiting student in the department. It is likely that time will be split between Oncology and Haematology within the Sheffield Children's Hospital. There may be opportunity for involvement in audits. |
Ophthalmology (Adult)There are an anticipated four visiting students places available within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital Ophthalmology department, throughout the year. |
Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery (Adult)The department is able to accommodate a maximum of 2 students at the Northern General Hospital site. |
Orthopaedic & Trauma Service (Paediatric)Based at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, the department is only able to offer 2 visiting elective attachment at any one given time. There may be the possibility of involvement in research and audit projects during the period of attachment. |
Plastic Surgery (Adult)The department can accommodate two visiting students at any time, split between the Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The attachments may be able to offer both elective and trauma/burns surgery. |
Plastic Surgery (Paediatric)The department is able to offer only one clinical placement at any given time. |
Renal & General Surgery (Adult)This attachment will cover both general and transplant surgery and a maximum of four visiting students can be accommodated at any one time. Opportunities exist to be involved in departmental research and audits. |
Respiratory Medicine (Adult)The department can consider two students at any one time. Visiting students may be exposed to a whole range of respiratory medicine – lung cancer, including interventional bronchosopy, TB, Sleep, Non-invasive ventilation, cystic fibrosis, asthma, occupational lung disease and acute respiratory work. |
Respiratory Medicine (Paediatric)The department may potentially be in a position to consider 2-3 visiting students throughout the year. There is the potential to be involved in research during the clinical attachment in this specialty. |
Rheumatology (Adult)The department is able to accommodate only one visiting elective student at any one time. Please note that clinical attachments are not available throughout August each year and over the Christmas vacation. |
Surgery (Paediatric)Sub-specialties offered include orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ENT and Plastics. The department can potentially offer attachments for 1-2 students at any given time throughout the year. |
Trauma & Orthopaedics (Adult)The department, located at the Northern General Hospital, is able to accommodate 2 visiting students throughout the year. However, it will not accept these from the 3rd week in July until 1st week in September. |
Vascular Surgery (Adult)Only available May – July each year. No applications will be considered for clinical placements outside of this timeframe. Only two students will be accepted annually. |
