Clubbing crew helps young adults paint the town red
Volunteer students from the University of Sheffield donned their dancing shoes last night (Tuesday 16 March 2010) as they hit the clubs with local young adults with learning disabilities.
12 students accompanied six young adults to a Union Club night as part of the Clubbing Crew initiative. The project aims to open up opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities who find it difficult to access social opportunities which their peers take for granted.
The scheme involves fortnightly activities throughout the year including, games, quizzes, bowling and visits to local bars to build relationships between the volunteers and participants, ready for their club nights this Spring.
All 18 student volunteers on the project have received training in safeguarding adults and disability awareness. The also attend introductory sessions at youth clubs for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. Working closely with Sheffield Futures, the Clubbing Crew initiative is promoted across a number of youth groups in Sheffield.
Roger Simmons, Team Manager of the Learning Difficulties and Disability at Sheffield Futures, said: "Clubbing Crew gives a number of young disabled people in Sheffield the opportunity to go to bars and clubs. This is an exciting and innovative project run by enthusiastic, committed volunteer "buddies". It deserves full support."
Becca Hartley and Becky May, both student Project Leaders, said: "Clubbing Crew enables us to give others the opportunity to do something that we take for granted. By speaking to participants and parents it is clear that we are making a difference and gives us a great sense of personal satisfaction and achievement."
Tom, a participant on the scheme, said: "I love music; the nights are very exciting and have a good buzz."
Paul, another participant on the scheme, said: "It's the best night of my life, I don't normally get the chance to go out."
