Puzzle book provides the science behind the sudoku
A psychologist from the University of Sheffield has written a new brain training book designed to give the reader a thorough mental work out, whilst also answering the scientific questions about how brain training works.
The Rough Guide Book of Brain Training which is written by Dr Tom Stafford, from the University of Sheffield´s Department of Psychology, and Dr Gareth Moore, a brain training and puzzle author, contains 100 days worth of puzzles designed to exercise our brains.
Brain training is the new craze to improve the mind´s performance in a multitude of ways. This book, which is the first interactive Rough Guide, allows the reader to play along, providing puzzles to exercise their mind and discussing the scientific evidence behind the brain training headlines.
There are 500 puzzles with favourites such as sudoku and kakuro, alongside many entirely new puzzle types. All the solutions are included and regular test pages allow the reader to chart their progress.
In addition to the puzzles, the book explains recent scientific research into training grey matter, as well as providing a plethora of weird and wonderful facts. These include amazing facts about the structure and evolution of the brain, what makes a genius and what to do to give you the best chance of having a healthy brain in old age.
Dr Tom Stafford said: "Research shows that we can all train ourselves to be sharper, faster and healthier. The important thing for mental fitness is to keep ourselves challenged, and brain training puzzles are one way of doing this. It is never too late to start. The book has tips on how to exercise every part of your mind, and many different types of puzzle so that you can find out some of your strengths and weaknesses. We hope that by providing the scientific explanations behind the training, the reader can really understand how to keep the brain in top shape." Notes for Editors: Puzzle creator Dr Gareth Moore has supplied thousands of puzzles to newspapers and magazines.
Author Dr Tom Stafford is a lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sheffield. He co-authored Mind Hacks, a popular guide to the workings of the mind and brain.
