Students walk on hot embers for local charity

Students at the University of Sheffield turned up the heat on their fundraising events last week (12 November 2009), as they took part in a charity Firewalk.

Five students took part in the event, which raised money for local charity, Neurocare. The Firewalk, which was held at Norfolk Arms, Ringinglow, began with a two-hour motivational psychology fear buster seminar which aimed to equip participants with the confidence needed to walk unharmed across wood embers.

The students then took it in turns to complete the challenge and brave the walk across the hot embers. A total of £500 has already been raised, with fundraising efforts continuing until Christmas.

Sian Evans, who took part in the event, said: "RAG´s Firewalk challenge was amazing - walking across hot coals for charity. If you are ever in doubt in taking part in an event for RAG – Just do it because I´ve had a really good night and raised money for charity at the same time."

After completing the challenge, Claire Monk, Activities Officer at the University, said: "The worst bit was standing on the cold floor after. I want to do it all again, especially as it is all for charity. The motivational speak was amazing – I am strong! I am invincible!"

Neurocare is a groundbreaking local charity, which raises money for the Neurosciences Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

Emma Douglas, fundraiser for Neurocare, said: "I would like to say thank you to the University of Sheffield for putting a team forward for this exciting challenge! This is the third time Neurocare has arranged the Firewalk and everyone always says what an amazing experience it is.

"It´s a great event for Neurocare because it brings in all different types of people from across the city. I also took part and it was really exciting. Next year we´re thinking of doing a Glass Walk."

The event was hosted by Firewalking experts, Blaze, who run similar events across the county and local charity.

Notes for Editors: Over the past three years, Neurocare has raised more than three quarters of a million pounds to buy equipment to save and improve the lives of patients with a range of debilitating neurological conditions, including brain tumours, strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson´s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease and Epilepsy.
