Pupils get a taste of life as doctors and dentists
The University of Sheffield, working in partnership with the Aimhigher NHS strand, hosted a visit for 100 pupils from local schools to give them an insight into a career as a health professional.
Students from St Michaels, Willowgarth, Darton High and the Carlton Community College, took part in the event, which aimed to introduce them to life at university and open their eyes to future career prospects.
The students enjoyed a tour of the University campus before undertaking practical taster sessions related to NHS professions.
The pupils worked with current Medical Students, learning how to take patients temperature, blood pressure, how to give injections and resuscitation techniques using body dummies. They were also given a taste of a career in Dentistry and created `dental crowns´ using Plastercine.
Carole Jerome, of the Aimhigher NHS strand, was on hand to answer any NHS career related questions that the pupils had and to give practical guidance to anyone who was considering a career within the health care professions. Pupils also took part in the `Aimhigher Cashcourse´ to introduce them to the student funding and bursaries available from the NHS.
Gaynor Hamilton, from the University´s Outreach Team, said: "This event brought together a number of Aimhigher projects to provide a good educational experience for the pupils. Pupils commented on how `hands on´ and enjoyable the day had been, with over half of them saying that they were considering study at Further Education level and that the day had made them more aware of the help that was available in pursuing a ` medical ` career. We hope that by running events such as this, we can raise the attainment and aspiration levels of local children."
