Students give away over £117,000 to charity

Students from the University of Sheffield were joined by Councillor Paul Scriven yesterday (28 October 2009) to hand over a total of £117,000 to a number of local charities.

Four student representatives, from the Raising and Giving Society (RAG) at the University, handed over the funds, which were raised through a variety of activities over the course of last year.

Sheffield RAG has 32 student committee members who give up their spare time to organise events to raise money for charity. The students decided to specifically raise money for local charities and make a real difference to the local people of Sheffield. Events last year included a Wipeout Charity Challenge, the annual BUMMIT event, which sees students hitchhiking from Sheffield to Croatia, and the annual Spiderwalk – a half-marathon night walk through the Peaks.

Representatives from Edale Mountain Rescue, Burton Street Foundation and Cavendish Cancer Care attended the event and received the cheques from the students.

Councillor Paul Scriven said: "I´m delighted to be here today to celebrate and congratulate what students contribute to this city. In addition to helping people dream bigger dreams, we are helping them to achieve their dreams. These charities are not able to achieve the fantastic work they do without the support of individuals, like students, that give up their spare time to raise money. Despite what the headlines can sometimes say, students do a fantastic job in this city and I want to say thank you to them on behalf of all 530,000 Sheffielders."

Rachel Colley, Chair of the RAG committee, said: "We´re delighted to hand over this money today and celebrate the fundraising efforts of the students over the last year. The students are really enthusiastic, particularly when it is for a local cause. We have a great relationship with the local charities and we often visit them to see where the money is going, and that can be really rewarding. It is great to be able to engage in this way with the city we now call home."

Chris Press, a graduate from the University, who now volunteers with Edale Mountain Rescue, said: "We are immensely impressed with what the students have achieved and on behalf of the Edale Mountain Rescue Team, I want to say a huge thank you. We monitor one of the biggest climbing areas in the world, and rely completely on donations such as these. The donation will go towards much needed new medical equipment to help support the team´s work."
