Locals inspired to dream bigger dreams
Members of the public are to invited to a series of fun-filled activities during half-term (26-31 October 2009), aimed at encouraging people to reach for the stars.
The week-long celebration aims to inspire people to discover and understand new things and provides an opportunity for local people to take part in a number of varied activities. The week will be hosted by different student groups and societies from the University and will also celebrate the positive contribution students make to the city.
During the week there will be an exciting schedule of performances and interactive activities for everyone to get involved in. This will include some language tasters, fun based science activities for kids, and a range of musical performances from the Department of Music.
U Sport which manages the University´s sporting activities, along with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, will also be on hand to offer football coaching, a penalty shoot-out and free health checks for members of the public.
In addition, there will be performances and workshops from a range of student societies, which will include hip-hop dancing, samba drumming, singing, circus acts and Capoeira an Afro-Brazillian art form that combines elements of martial arts, games, music and dance.
The Raising and Giving Society (RAG) will also be holding a special Sheffield city centre wide treasure hunt and photo competition with some great prizes on offer. The RAG Society will also be joined by Councillor Paul Scriven during the week to hand over a total of £117,000 to charity, which was raised last year. The students decided to specifically raise money for local charities and make a real difference to the people of Sheffield. These charities include Edale Mountain Rescue, Cavendish Cancer Care and the Burton Street Project.
All events are free and there is no need to register. There will also be a series of information boards and stalls situated in the Winter Gardens throughout the week. Notes for Editors: For more information and a full timetable of events, please visit the Dream Bigger Dreams webpages.
