Musical stars in Sheffield for Autumn Concert Series
The University of Sheffield launches its Autumn Concert Season on Tuesday 20 October 2009, with a performance by critically acclaimed chamber ensemble, The Dante Quartet. The Quartet features well-known Sheffield musician, Bernard Gregor-Smith, a former cellist of the world-famous Lindsay Quartet.
The concert, which will take place at Firth Hall, will mark the first of twelve evening concerts, which will take place between now and Christmas. The Dante Quartet is known for their imaginative programming and the emotional intensity of its performances, and has previously won many prestigious chamber music awards.
Timothy West one of Britain´s best loved actors will feature in a concert, `Casanova the World's Greatest Lover´. Timothy West is best known for his command on the classical stage and in several other mediums including radio, film and TV. Sophie Yates, one of the country´s most sought-after harpsichordists will intersperse West's readings with harpsichord music at its very finest, including music by Mozart and Handel.
The season of music will also give local people a chance to experience music from a range of countries, which will include dynamic dancing monks from India.
Some unusual and dynamic acts will also feature in the series. In December CHROMA, a critically acclaimed chamber ensemble, will revamp the work of Bach in a modern take on 17th and 18th Century music.
The concerts will also celebrate the talent of a number of groups from the University as the University Chamber Choir will stage a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury.
In addition to the evening concert series, there will also be a series of Free Lunchtime concerts, taking place on Thursdays, 1.10pm at the University Drama Studio, commencing Thursday 22 October 2009 with a programme of Jazz improvisation with the Mick Beck Stephen Grew Duo. All evening concerts will take place at the University´s Firth Court, Firth Hall, Western Bank, 7.30pm.
