National accolade for Sheffield Urban Studies student
A student from the University of Sheffield has been Highly Commended in the Association of Women in Property's National Student Awards 2009.
Hannah Wright, a third-year Urban Studies student at the University of Sheffield, won the accolade, which was given as a special additional award, due to her professionalism and performance in the closely contested competition.
This is the second consecutive year that a University of Sheffield student has triumphed in the Awards. Last year, Marie Reaveley, also then studying Urban Studies and Planning, won the National Student Awards `Best of the Best´ title.
The Women in Property National Student Awards were launched in 2007 to celebrate the 20th birthday of the Association. This year 38 universities put forward their rising stars - a total of 60 of the most talented students from across the country. The Awards are open to second year female students studying a Built Environment course and are run in conjunction with the Construction Youth Trust (CYT).
All entrants were nominated by their universities, after which they were invited to present one piece of coursework to regional judging panels. The eight finalists were then interviewed by a final panel on the morning of the `Best of Best´ dinner, when the national winner was decided. The 2010 National Student Awards are already underway, with universities across the UK being invited to nominate their best second year students.
Hannah also previously won the Yorkshire 2009 Women in Property Award, which included £500 and a four week placement at the Renaissance Unit in Leeds working in civic architect, John Thorp's, office.
Hannah said: "I´ve really enjoyed being part of the Women in Property Awards. It has been wonderful to have the opportunity to speak with such prestigious people in the property industry and also to be considered amongst such impressive women. The awards have boosted my confidence and career prospects dramatically and will be encouraging other young women to get involved. It is always nice to know your heading in the right direction!"
Dr Alasdair Rae, from the University´s Department of Town and Regional Planning, said: "The department is delighted that Hannah has been recognised in this way - a fitting accolade for a student who is dedicated, professional and highly organised. Hannah's contribution to the life of the department is second to none and, as her Year Tutor, I have very much enjoyed working with her. It is clear that she has a very bright future."
Joanna Embling the current national chairman of Women in Property and one of the national judges confirmed that the decision was not an easy one: "We were amazed by the talent and confidence of all the finalists - in the view of the judges they are all winners." Notes for Editors: Women in Property is a national organisation which was founded in 1987.
