University women´s badminton team wins BUSA shield
The University of Sheffield´s women´s badminton team has triumphed at the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Indoor Championships, by beating London Metropolitan University, to claim the BUSA badminton shield.
The Sheffield team of six students battled it out against the London team in a closely contested final at Sheffield´s English Institute of Sport. Although score lines were very close in all the matches, the Sheffield team were well-deserved winners with a final score of 7-1.
This latest victory is one of a string of wins for the Sheffield women´s team and means they have been unbeaten all season. Their success this season will also secure them promotion to the BUSA Northern 1A league next season.
Jennifer Antkowiak, team captain of the University of Sheffield´s women's badminton team, and who is studying genetics and molecular cell biology at the University, said: "I am delighted that we have won the BUSA badminton shield. The shield and our status at the top of our league is testament to the hard work and commitment of all the team members and the support of our coaches and the staff at U sport. I can´t wait to start next season in the higher division and see if we can continue to succeed at a higher level."
Andy Cox, Club Sport Manager at U Sport, which manages the University´s sporting facilities and activities, added: "At U Sport we are very keen to support and offer guidance to the University´s sporting teams and ensure they have the facilities and coaching staff available to achieve the best possible results.
"I watched the University´s women´s badminton team in action at the final in Sheffield and was very impressed with their skills and determination. Everyone at U Sport is extremely proud of them and I wish them every success next season in their new league."
During the season, the University of Sheffield´s women´s badminton team has beaten nine other University teams across the country to top their league, including Sheffield Hallam University´s women´s team, who they beat 8-0 last month.
