Director of Joseph Rowntree Foundation to deliver talk to city businesses

Lord Richard Best, OBE, Director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation will deliver a keynote speech at the University of Sheffield next week. The event marks the second formal dinner meeting of the University's Managing Directors' Club this year. Lord Best's speech, entitled 'Profits and Good Works: Should the Two be Kept Apart?' will form a central part of the event on Thursday 21 April, 2005, at which representatives from local companies can meet to exchange ideas and expertise.

Lord Best, who received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sheffield in 2003, is the Chief Executive of both the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation aims to understand the causes of social difficulties in the UK and explore new ways of overcoming them, by supporting a programme of research and development in the fields of housing, social care and social policy.

The Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust is both a charity and a registered social landlord which carries out a number of housing projects across Yorkshire. The trust aims to meet the special needs of its tenants, whilst exploring new features of design.

The University's Managing Director's Club was formed in 1987, and includes members from many of the region's leading companies. The club provides an effective forum for members of the local business community to find out about the University's research capabilities and expertise, whilst making new contacts from a wide variety of organisations.

Members of the Managing Directors Club are invited to attend six formal dinner meetings over the course of the year - each one featuring a high-profile keynote address from a leading figure in industry, commerce or government.

Ian Proctor from the University's Office of Corporate Partnerships welcomed Lord Best's visit, saying, "We're delighted to welcome such a high-profile speaker to the second Managing Directors' Club dinner meeting of 2005. Our meetings give local business leaders a unique opportunity to forge new links with the University of Sheffield, and we expect that Lord Best's contribution to this meeting will ensure that it is an enjoyable and thought-provoking night for all our members."
