University celebrates success of Caribbean graduates

40 local educators in St Lucia and Trinidad will be awarded degree certificates from the University of Sheffield in early January, in front of the President of Trinidad and Tobago and the Minister of External Affairs in St Lucia.

The students will be presented their degrees by the University´s Vice Chancellor, Professor Bob Boucher, after completing distance learning programmes in Education from the University of Sheffield. The students have studied at various levels – from Certificate in Education to PhD, and will be receiving their degrees in Tobago on 4 January and in St Lucia on 6 January.

Professor Wilfred Carr, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield and long-standing supporter of professional education in the Caribbean explains, "This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the community of Sheffield students, alumni and staff that has grown in St Lucia and Tobago. We have been running programmes in the area for fifteen years, and are delighted that around 400 people will be celebrating the achievement of our Caribbean students, both past and present.

"We are also thrilled to be able to welcome His Excellency Julian Robert Hunte, Minister of External affairs from St Lucia and His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, into this extended family, by conferring them with the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters."
