Profile
Dr Long joined the University of Sheffield as a Reader in 2012. Before this she was a senior lecturer at Durham University, where she worked from 2003 to 2012. Dr Long received her BEng, MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Chongqing University in China. She then worked as a lecturer and then an associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmissions, China, for nine years. From 1996 to 2003 she worked as a research associate and research fellow at the University of Strathclyde, the University of Wales Swansea and Brunel University.
Research Areas
Dr Long's current research is centred on two broad areas, wind energy and advanced manufacturing technology. Within the area of wind energy her work has been focused on investigating wind turbine gearbox reliability, stochastic loading, statistical characteristics of operational conditions and their effects on premature failures of key mechanical components.
In the area of manufacturing, her work has involved the numerical modelling of metal forming processes, including extrusion and spinning, and welding processes using thermo-elastic-plastic finite element methods. The aim is to prevent material failures by optimising the process design and to achieve a better product quality and dimensional accuracy.
Current Research Themes
Wind turbine technology:
- Stochastic loading and statistical characteristics of wind turbine field operational conditions;
- Reliability-centered design and failure analysis for wind turbine gearboxes;
- Probabilistic finite element modelling of gear tooth surface micropitting.
Advanced manufacturing technology:
- Non-linear finite element analysis and modelling of metal forming and welding processes;
- Process optimisation for material failure prevention in metal spinning;
- Springback control for better dimensional accuracy in metal spinning.
