Profile

Dr. Akram is a research associate, part of Energy 2050 team. He completed his BSc (honours) in Chemical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore Pakistan where he was awarded four gold medals for the best performance in Chemical Engineering and Plant design.

He then completed his MSc in Clean Technology in Chemical Engineering with distinction followed by MPhil degree in staged combustion of gas oil to reduce NOx from University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Dr. Akram completed his PhD degree in 2012 on “optimization of co-combustion of high moisture biomass with coal in a bubbling fluidized bed combustor” from University of South Wales.

Since joining Sheffield University, he is involved with different carbon capture technologies i.e. Selective exhaust gas recycle on gas turbines for economical carbon capture and carbon capture from coal and biomass firing. He works on National Carbon Capture (PACT) Facilities of the UKCCSRC where he works with a range of academic institutions and industries.

Before, starting his academic career, Dr. Akram worked at a caustic soda manufacturing plant. He has designed, commissioned and operated a number of combustion and gasification research rigs including a high pressure transport gasifier.

Professional activities and memberships

Dr. Akram has practical experience of working on a process plant producing caustic soda and a number by products. As a process engineer Dr. Akram was responsible for managing work force for the shift and quality control of the products including Ammonium Chloride, Calcium Chloride, solid and liquid caustic soda of different grades.
