Research Groups
Academic staff in the Department of Mechanical Engineering are organised into research groups that reflect their specific areas of research activity. Within each group are a number of research clusters, where staff work collaboratively in small groups with colleagues from both within the Department and across the University.
Each group contains staff whose interests encompass both fundamentals and applications. At the applied level groups co-operate with industry. Expertise in the different groups covers the need for the different programmes. Students are taught in a research-led environment and the programmes reflect the research strengths of staff.
Below is a summary of the current research groups in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with links to their individual webpages.
Thermofluids
The group's research activities cover aerodynamics, combustion, turbulence and bio-fluids using both computational (CFD) and experimental tools.

Design and Manufacturing
This group's activities cover a wide range, from manufacturing through design for living; current topics include sports equipment, packaging and sustainability, to enterprise and entrepreneurship in organisations.

Solid Mechanics
The linking theme of this group is research into the durability of engineering components and structures.

Dynamics
This group's research covers areas in active and semi-active control, damping, monitoring of machines and structures, and uncertainty and non-linearity.
