Research Summary

This group has significant research activities in the Aerospace sector, which has resulted in several major developments, namely the award of a UTC in Materials Damping Technology, supported by Rolls-Royce Plc and Rolls-Royce Plc/BAE Systems UTP.

The major expertise of the research staff is in smart materials, advanced damping techniques, linear and non-linear structural dynamics and signal processing.

Facilities

The research facilities of the group are considerable with recently established laboratories in Damping Technologies, the Ibberson Laboratory, Health Monitoring and a Human Dynamics laboratory. These complement the existing facilities supporting the internationally recognised work on electro and magneto-rheological fluids. A major thrust of the research work is in Innovative Manufacturing for Aerospace applications, which integrates smart damping technologies into the machining process/machine dynamics to reduce the onset of chatter, reduce noise, increase material removal and surface generation rates.
