Fully funded four year EngD Studentship
Thermo-Mechanical Impact of Machining Process on Work Piece Material Micro Structure
Sponsors: EPSRC / Sandvik Coromant
Proposed start date: Mid September 2012
Deadline for applications: 30th June 2012, however application may be closed before this date so early application is recommended.
A tax-free stipend of around £20,000 per annum is provided.
Background
It is believed that thermal and mechanical loads caused by machining operation have a major impact on surface integrity and surface behaviour of machined parts. However, the physical and micro structural behaviour of work piece material needs to be further studied in order to design tools and develop machining application methods to avoid undesirable surface behaviour.
Research Question
What is the thermo-dynamical impact of cutting temperature and cutting forces on surface micro structural behaviour?
Is it possible to better control the build up of machined affected surface?
Is it possible to avoid machined affected surface?
Scope
Survey analysis
Micro structural surface characterization
Development of models to predict the surface behaviour depending on cutting insert geometry, cutting insert grades and cutting data
The successful applicant will carry out milling and materials damage simulation and validation trials, and interact frequently with Sandvik Coromant and The University of Sheffield.
Eligibility
Applicants must have, or expect to get, a 1st or 2.1 degree in a relevant science or engineering subject (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, applied mathematics, or similar discipline).
This project is part funded by EPSRC, therefore applicants must meet EPSRC residency criteria. See How to Apply section for more information.
How to Apply for the Studentship
All applications should be submitted online. For further information, see the How to Apply section.
For an informal discussion, in the first instance please contact the IDC Centre Manager, Dr Andrea Haworth idc-machining-science@sheffield.ac.uk.
