The molecular biosciences for undergraduates

Our courses put you at the heart of developments in the molecular biosciences.

Our academic staff are scientists, leading experts in their field. We'll keep you up to date with the very latest developments in an exciting and rapidly changing area. Even more, we'll give you the knowledge and skills to be part of new discoveries throughout your career.

Our approach

Image: students in labOur aim is to prepare you for a variety of careers. So whichever degree you choose, the first year is exactly the same. This gives you a solid grounding in all the molecular biosciences – biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology.

It also gives you the chance to discover which areas interest you most, before you specialise in years two and three. Our course structure is very flexible – at the end of the first year you can transfer between any of the courses we offer. Similarly, you can transfer in either direction between the three-year BSc and four-year MBiolSci degree.

Hands-on practical training is an important part of your experience at Sheffield, which is why all our students do a practical project in the third year. The focus of your project depends on your career interests. So it could involve laboratory research, school teaching, science journalism or even business enterprise activities.

And with our recent £39 million refurbishment, you'll benefit from state-of-the-art practical labs and lecture theatres.

We're one of the UK's top departments for teaching and research. The Times Good University Guide ranks us third in the UK for biological sciences. In the 2011 National Student Survey we're number one for student satisfaction.

We believe in creating the right environment for you to excel in your discipline. So as a student with us you get the best of both worlds – the highest academic standards in a friendly and supportive community.

This means your tutorial groups stay small, right throughout your degree. And it means you'll join a team of approachable staff who will motivate you to achieve your best.

Many of our students act as mentors to new undergraduate students, so you'll also have a welcoming and enthusiastic student network on your side.

On top of that you'll be based in one of the University's iconic buildings, Firth Court, right in the centre of campus.
