Postgraduate opportunities

The School is divided into the three areas of Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, and Pure Mathematics. Each department offers MPhil and PhD degrees, and the Probability and Statistics department offers several MSc programmes in statistics, both full-time and by distance learning.

Admissions is controlled through the individual departments: each department has a postgraduate admissions tutor with whom you can discuss your research requirements, and identify a potential supervisor. You should consult the appropriate departmental webpage linked below.

Application forms are available (online and by post) from the Graduate Research Office (see link in See Also box on this page).

PhD studentships

The School of Mathematics and Statistics holds an EPSRC Doctoral Training Account to fund a number of PhD studentships. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact one of the admissions tutors via the departmental pages above for advice and information on the current situation concerning availability. Studentships will be for three to four years and will include fees and a stipend.

The School also offers a number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships, combining PhD study with teaching experience within the School. They are open to applicants who are eligible to pay home rather than overseas fees, and cover full fees plus an enhanced stipend, for 3.5 years. Currently (January 2010) we have one GTA available from February 2010, and others from September 2010. Please contact one of the admissions tutors for details.
