Address: Bill Lee joined the Department in 1989 from Ohio State University. He is a fellow of The American Ceramic Society and The Institute of Materials who awarded him the Rosenhain Medal and Premium in 1999 for distinguished contribution to Materials Science, and the Pfeil Award in 2000 (with H. Rezaie and W. M. Rainforth) for the ceramics paper of particular merit. Bill is a member of The High Scientific Council of The European Nuclear Society, The International Globilisation Task Force of the American Ceramic Society and Associate Editor of the Journal of The American Ceramic Society. Research InterestsHis research centres on the study of ceramic microstructures, their evolution and correlation with processing and properties. Most classes of ceramics are of interest, including refractories, glass ceramics, clay products, electroceramics and cements. Topics of current interest include development of C-containing castables, crystal formation in glasses containing radioactive waste, microstructure-property relations in porcelain stoneware, utilising glass waste in porcelain and glass ceramics, and corrosion of silica bricks. As Director of the ISL he has been responsible for setting up a team of over 40 researchers examining all aspects of immobilising radioactive and toxic waste in cements, glasses and ceramics. He has published over 250 papers in refereed journals and given numerous invited lectures e.g. to CIMTEC (Florence Italy 2002), Microscopy and Microanalysis (Quebec Canada 2002), ECerS (Istanbul Turkey 2003), Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts (Cape Town South Africa 2004) and International Conference on Refractories (Tehran Iran 2004). He has supervised 33 students to successful completion of their PhD´s. Selected Publications
