Aiden Lockwood obtained his MEng in Electronic Control and Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2005, before undertaking his PhD in Engineering Materials also at Sheffield, on "In-situ Nanoindentation in a Transmission Electron Microscope", which he completed in 2009. He was awarded a Doctoral Prize Fellowship in 2009 to expand his work on in-situ microscopy towards real-time studies of nanoscale friction and wear (nanotribology), which he continues to work on.
Research interests
- In-situ microscopy and surface characterisation techniques
- Instrumentation and integration of experimental systems for nanomanipulation and scanning probe microscopy control
- Nanoscale mechanical properties of individual asperity contacts
- Nanotribology (Friction and wear at the nanoscale)
- Design, fabrication and reliability of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)
- Surface conditioning, patterning and coatings
Current research
I am currently working on a project to develop instrumentation and microscopy techniques to enable real-time in-situ TEM studies of nanoscale contacts and tribological mechanisms. This includes nanoscale tribology of wear resistant coatings, dynamic nanoscale liquid systems and nanoparticle interactions between sliding contacts. I am also developing new and novel methods for quantitative nanoscale tribology analysis and surface characterisation.
