Aerospace Materials – course overview

In Years 1 and 2 (BEng and MEng), you will be introduced to the theories and concepts underpinning the selection, production, processing and use of materials in general, and specifically with reference to their use in the aerospace sector. You will take mainly 10 credit and occasionally 20 credit modules. There may be opportunities for you to spend Semester 1 of the second year studying abroad, depending on suitable courses and destinations being found.
In Year 3 (BEng and MEng), you will receive management training, and undertake group project work to improve your team-working skills.
In Year 3 (BEng only), you will also complete an individual research project, with an aerospace materials focus. This will give you in-depth specialist knowledge and understanding of a particular aspect of the subject, and is a great opportunity to work on the area that most interests you.
In Year 3 (MEng only), you will complete a 5-month-long industrial work placement in an aerospace-related company. This will help you gain valuable experience of the aerospace industry while simultaneously helping you to develop key transferable skills. It can be carried out in either the UK or overseas. The department will help you to find a placement, negotiate a suitable project, and we will also provide support while you are away.
In Year 4 (MEng only) you will complete both a group industrial project worth 20 credits and a 40-credit individual research project in the field of materials appropriate for aerospace applications.
All the modules you will take in Years 3 (BEng and MEng) and 4 (MEng only) are focused on helping you develop a deeper specialist knowledge and understanding of the relevant demands placed upon materials in aerospace applications.
