Lampros Kourtis
My name is Lampros Kourtis and I come from Greece. I attended the Masters of Metallurgy in 2007. Sheffield University was recommended to me by one of the professors from the university where I did my undergraduate degree as well as a friend of mine who did the MMet in the past and was very satisfied with it. Moreover, from my own research, I quickly established that Sheffield, otherwise known as Steel City, has an abiding, world wide recognition and excellent reputation in the field of Engineering Materials and especially in Metallurgy. Having completed my Post-graduate studies there, I firmly believe that the Engineering Materials Department offers a great perspective for any candidate.
The MMet (Advanced Metallurgy) course is ideal for students of metallurgy/material science disciplines. The modules of the course, as well as the expert academic staff, provided me with a wide and deep understanding of metallurgical subjects. The department has research partnerships with many industrial/research organizations like Corus, The Welding Institute (TWI) etc. These partnerships provide opportunities for students to undertake interesting industrial projects as part of their studies as well as make important connections for their future development. For my project I developed a Matlab code modelling the effect of alloy additions on the CTE of the Invar (Fe-Ni) system for Maher.
After finishing the MMet course I feel confident about my knowledge on Metallurgy as well as about my research and experimental skills. I believe that I have enhanced my future perspectives either working in industry or continuing as a PhD student. This year of living and studying abroad was a great experience, helping to develop my interpersonal skills and my ability to function with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
