In praise of an English radical - A tribute to Linda Smith
Sunday 14 May 2006
Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield
Friends, family and fellow comedians are staging a tribute concert in memory of comedian Linda Smith who died in February. Linda was a regular panel member on Radio 4's NEWS QUIZ and JUST A MINUTE and appeared regularly on BBC TV's HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU.
Sheffield was always a significant place for Linda as it was where she attended university and launched her career. She maintained close links with the city throughout her life.
Among those performing will be Linda's friends Jeremy Hardy, John Hegley, Steve Gribbin, and acclaimed jazz singer Sandi Russell. Also on the bill will be celebrated Sheffield acts The Chuffinelles, Betty Spital, The Mysterons and Don Valley & the Rotherhides. There will also be reminiscences from friends, colleagues and other performers.
Linda's partner Warren Lakin explains: 'The concert is a thank you to her Radio 4 listeners and her South Yorkshire friends and fans as much as a tribute to Linda. I was completely blown away by the hundreds of emails and letters I received in the days following her death, many of them deserving a book of their own.'
The concert is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the British Humanist Association, of which Linda was president.
